Week 27 - Welcome back everyone this weekend has been a busy and a hot one! Friday night I managed to make it to the Red Bull X Fighters show that was held in the Nottingham market square which is where this week’s image comes from, unfortunately most of the images came out rather silhouetted as this was a massive learning curve for me for which I failed so I have used the silhouette to create this rather retro look and feel after a little manipulation within my photo editing package overall I think it has come of rather well and thus thought I would post it up so as to get your thoughts (and any tips you may have on exposure light metering!) this Sunday I spent the day at the R.A.F Waddington air show and the imaging results were very similar yet again so I think I need some help with fast action subject! Well I am sure I can get a few images out of the trip and will try and perhaps get one up next week for your all-important critique. Ok guys thanks again for popping back and passing me your important thoughts and comments on my images, have a great week one and all Jurgen

  • With subjects like this Jurgen you've got to add one and a half to two stops extra exposure. You should have an "exposure compensation" button/dial somewhere on the camera, if in doubt read the instruction manual! Same holds for your air shaow shots the sky is being exposed as a mid tone whereas it needs to be lighter. Not a fault of yours but a characteristic of exposure meters. Remember dark subject light background - ADD exposure, light subject dark background LESS exposure.
However in this instance it has worked well in your favour and you've got a powerful and very effective image. Would have been slightly better if we could have seen the shape of the rider's head thoug, rather than his chin sticking up in the air.

  • 1/4000 is way to fast for this type of shot. You would probably get away with 1/250 or 1/100 and with that you would get more exposure in the rider. I would have locked exposure to the rider before he jumped, and tracked the subject to the desired position. I do like the effect you have here though!

  • Aye not a bad end result mate! Nice graphic image. To get proper exposure when shooting a subject on a brightly lit background one way to do it is to dial in some exposure compensation, I used 1 stop or more when shooting the aircraft at Waddington and it worked well. The same would apply to your biker here.
